CC1310: CC1310 multiple frequency range in a single design

Part Number: CC1310

Tool/software:

Hi.

We're evaluating CC1310 for a new project. This project requires operating in three ranges:

  1. 319.5 MHz, OOK, rx only
  2. 345 MHz, OOK, rx only
  3. 433 MHz, OOK, possibly rx+tx

Is it viable to design a custom balun (with discrete components, not an IPC) for CC1310 to support all three ranges adequately?

Best regards, Vasyl.

  • Hi Vasyl,

    Please see: https://e2e.ti.com/support/wireless-connectivity/sub-1-ghz-group/sub-1-ghz/f/sub-1-ghz-forum/1414467/c

It is of course possible to design a custom balun that supports all three frequency bands with optimum performance, but that would require redesigning the matching network as well as the layout (potentially quite significantly). It is recommended to first follow the lower risk approach using the steps outlined in the thread linked above to give you a baseline performance - you may find that it is acceptable.

    Regards,

  • Hi Zack, and thank you for the blazing fast reply.

This older topic suggests using 433 MHz for a 315 MHz operation. I believe we can rework the LAUNCHXL-CC1310 and test it.

However, the next step with fine-tuning seems necessary. Do you have any app notes with a detailed tuning procedure? Like a SWRA726 for antennas, but with a focus on the balun?

  • Hi Vasyl,

Unfortunately not; there are many ways you could approach this depending on the tools you have available.

Do you have access to an EDA tool such as Keysight ADS or AWR Microwave Office where you can simulate the RF path?

You could also consider testing different PA table settings for 315 MHz operation using the process outlined in Section 10 of SWRA640 (CC13xx/CC26xx Hardware Configuration and PCB Design Considerations): https://www.ti.com/lit/swra640 - you may find that there is a more optimal PA table setting for 315 MHz operation. However, for this to be reliable you would need to test on a fairly large device population.
