Invalid Frequency Error on SmartRF

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC1120

When using CC1120EVM on SmartRF TrxEB (ver7) with SmartRF v7 (rev1.16) on PC, I get "Invalid Frequency error" for frequencies between 160MHz and 164MHz.

The issue is these frequencies are legal in New Zealand for ISM applications and I would like to use SmartRF for development.

I am reasonably sure the CC1120 is capable of working over this band - even if not fully tested.

So the issue is can SmartRF be told to accept 160MHz to 164MHz as valid? Maybe a back door approach by informing the SmartRF software I have a different crystal fitted might do it.

Comments and help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

  • The 160 MHz to 164 MHz band is not supported by CC1120 (see the register description for FS_CFG.FS_BAND). If you write the FREQ word directly in SmartRF Studio you are able to set the frequency outside the supported bands. The limitation is the tuning range of the VCO. For a typical chip it is fully possible that you may cover parts of the band in question but we haven't tested. If you decide to try a production test has to be in place to check that the VCO lock on the correct frequency over conditions.
