CC1190 consumption without antenna...

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC1190, MSP430F5310, CC1120

If one is supplying power to the CC1190 but the setup dosen't have an antenna connected, is it possible that the balun could still consume extra current even if transmission capability is not being used?

Thank you for your time,

-Amanda

  • It is not clear from your post how the setup is. If PA_EN=LNA_EN=0 CC1190 is in power down and the power consumption will not be dependent on what is connected to the RF pins.

If PA_EN=1 the current will be dependent on the power level at the PA_IN pin and the impedance the PA_OUT pin will see. If an antenna is not connected the impedance will be different from the optimal impedance and the current consumption will change.

The balun as such does not consume power.
  • Thanks, TER.
    In general there are questions:
    1) If antenna is not connected to the CC1190 during transmission - can it cause CC1190 damage?
    2) Current consumption during sleep for module: MSP430F5310+CC1120+CC1190 is around 14mA.
    MSP430F5310+CC1120 consumes 340uA (separate design without CC1190)
MSP430F5310 consumes 22 uA (Just microprocessor board with MSP430F5310 )
removing power from CC1190 do not change current and it is 14mA.
Question: is it possible- that current consumption related to the balun "0900PC15J0013"?

    Thanks.

  • 1) No, we have run load pull measurements where the antenna port sees all possible loads and I have not seen any issues with presenting an open port.
    2) When CC1120 and CC1190 are in SLEEP mode the external load shouldn't matter. It sounds like the CC1120 doesn't go down in SLEEP. First I would like to take a look at the schematic to see how everything are connected. Could you post it? Or if you don't want to post it directly on the forum, send me a friend request and you will be able to send it offline.
