CC1310EMK: Using Right Angle RF connector with CC1310 Green Radio module seem to cause mismatch

Part Number: CC1310EMK
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC1310

When the external antenna is mounted on the Green Radio CC1310 it works fine. We modified the Green Radio for external antenna and it worked fine. Once we use the right angle RF connector the Radio give up on communication.

We used DigiKey Right Angle RF connector part number: ACX1249-ND. Do you recommend different Right Angle RF connector? Is there any modification to the Green Radio board that need be done? Please advice.

Note that we followed the external antenna modification instructions per the schematic of TI for the Green Radio in this link: http://www.ti.com/tool/cc1310emk

Thank you in advance for your help.

  • - If you get the expected performance by placing the antenna directly to the SMA connector on the CC1310EM you don't need to do anything more to get it to work with a angled RF connector.

    Some questions:
    - Could you confirm that you get the expected performance if you remove the right angle connector and connect the antenna directly to the EM? (I have seen before that the antenna could be damaged, either the tap or something broken.)
    - Do you see any difference if you make the antenna point in a different direction? Now it's close to a large ground plane with the PCB under it.

I doubt that that the right angle connector is a issue. To be sure, measure that you have connection from one end to the other.
  • Thank you TER for your reply.

Yes I did change the direction of the antenna mounted on the right angle connector that is seated on the Green Radio, it didn't work. What worked is when touching the tip of the antenna with your thumb and index fingers - so we thought to hire someone to keep his finger there all times - lol - just kidding.

Yes the antenna we used does work when mounted on both the CC1310 Red EM Radio and Green Radio - we tried couple of antennas and got the same results.

Apparently holding the tip of the antenna with your fingers is changing the impedance to what it needs to be - so we may need to do slight modification to the matching circuit just before the antenna. Any idea regarding this impedance modification or alternate solution is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you...

  • Hi TER,

Adding to the reply Mike has provided, this scenario is observed in 3 different radio boards (so all 3 different radio boards, 3 different antenna and 3 different right angle connector)

We get expected performance when we connect the antenna directly to the EM.

    Thank you

    Vikram

  • Which antennas (name and number) did you test? I have to check if the the angle to the ground plane is a factor on the antenna you have selected.
  • Apparently the problem didn't exist since a bad connector was used or good connector was mishandled. We will keep you informed should the problem pops up again.

    Thank you.
