CC1350: Sub-GHz antenna discrepancy between CC1350 and DN038 antenna dimensions

Part Number: CC1350

I've been basing a new design on the CC1350 Launchpad, using a 1.6mm thick PCB. I already had a footprint for the DN038 868/915MHz Helical antenna so made use of it. It wasn't until I measured the board that something didn't add up. For some reason the first section of the antenna is a couple of millimetres longer than the dimension (H) stated in the DN036 document (http://www.ti.com/lit/an/swra416/swra416.pdfOn top of that, it also has one extra 'winding'making it longer still.

Can anyone explain why this antenna is different/longer? Should I be using these new dimensions and layout or is the DN038 still acceptable for use with the CC1350?

  • The lower the RF frequency get the more sensitive a PCB antenna will be to the size of the ground plane. The DN038 design uses a smaller board than the CC1350 LP and it was found that changing the antenna some for the CC1350 LP the antenna itself is much closer to 50 ohm.
