CC1101: CC1100 versus CC1101 Output Power Differences

Part Number: CC1101
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC1100

I'm working with a customer who is in the process of preparing for the regulatory testing of a product with the CC1101 (upgraded from the CC1100).

DN009 “Upgrade from CC1100 to CC1101” states “CC1100 can be replaced by CC1101 without changing register settings.”  Based on that, I planned on using the same code for both.  However, I thought I would check the power table settings in DN012 and DN013 since we give the test house a variety of values to try.  The power levels are different for the same register setting.  We have been using 0x8A which is 2.6 dBm for the CC1100 and 1.8 dBm for the CC1101 at 915 MHz.  At 868 Mhz the CC1100 is 3.0 dBm and the CC1101 is 2.1 dBm.  Is keeping the value the same going to make any significant change in the range or power used by the new chip?

Thanks,

Stuart

  • How many chips have you measured output power on and compared? It will be some chip to chip variation and therefore you can't compare output power from one CC1100 and one CC1101 (or one CC1101 with one CC1101 for that matter) directly since in worst case one unit could have max and the other min power.
  • The chips were not measured.  The question is based on the stated values in the Power column of the Power Tables in Design Notes DN012 and DN013.  These are different between the CC1100 and CC1101 for the same register setting.  Design Note DN009 states that the same register settings can be used for both parts, but it appears that there is a difference in power if this is done.

  • I believe the difference is due to the BOM and not the chip. If you look at the schematic for the 868-915 Ms for CC1100 and CC1101 the first one use LQG and the second LQW inductors.

  • I still need to know if the performance of the CC1101 is going to be different than the CC1100 with the same register setting. Or do I need to change the register setting to make the Power values match?
  • No, use the same settings. The output stage of the PA has not been changed between CC1100 and CC1101.
