CC1310: cc1310 7x7 128KB purchased from digikey 2 Nov 2018 is v2.0 silicon - product failure

Part Number: CC1310

Purchased cc1310 from Digikey 3 Nov 2018 and prototype run came back non-functional as it was v2.0 silicon.   Digikey unable provide details how to get v2.1 - indicated that the chips come from TI and they sell them.

Is there a way to guarantee v2.1 cc1310 silicon?   We are planning a run of boards and assembly in china and are not sure how to control this.

Thanks,

Thom

  • We have had the rev B (2.1) version in production for some time now so it's surprising that you have been able to buy rev A at all.

    - Could you please post the markings on the chips you have received? (I'm interested in the lot code to see when they were produced)
    - If you check with DigiKey, when did they receive the chips they have sold you?
  • Closing this thread since I haven't received any feedback.
  • Hi TER,

I'm busy working critical path build for CES.   If you can please give me until Thanksgiving, I will post all the sordid details.   I've got another build of boards in process in China and no easy way to control the supply chain.   In the future, it would be fantastic (and necessary to keep my business) if TI could please give a new part number when silicon has the level of critical flaws that were corrected from v2.0 to v2.1.

Pictures and info to come in a couple days.

    Thanks

  • No problem. I'll send a couple internally to see if I can find out more since you are not the only one that have experienced this:

  • Rev B has been out on the market for close to 2 years and we stopped production of rev A then. Since you actually received rev A from Digikey indicate that they have not sold their oldest material first. That is something you have to talk with with Digikey about. You can also order up to 10 k on store.ti.com

Do you use a feature on CC1310 that require you to have a rev B part?
  • Can you re-open the thread, or I can add another thread if that's how it is best handled.

  • You can continue to use this thread.
  • Digikey (who I've done business with since the 90's) are indicating they sell what TI provides.  I'm concerned that someone is pulling old stock out of a dumpster - not sure if it's TI or Digikey.

Biggest problem is when we scale to production, we have no control of when parts come from the dumpster.   I have purchased cc1310 based modules in the past 6 months from cdebyte in china - same issue, mix of old and new silicon (read that as dead or living hardware as we have a cost sensitive design and have removed the 32khz xtal for high volume runs).   Can you imagine building a pre-production run of 1000 boards and not knowing what you'll get?   I am willing to fly to texas to hand pick the chips if necessary as that would cost less than the rework or re-run of production.   What are my options for supply chain into China?   We are willing to pay extra to TI to guarantee the silicon version (and own the disaster if the dumpster gets accessed).

Attached are photos in random order...

    1) photo of eStore ordered part that came from digikey not mouser, appears by date code to be v2.1.   We have boards at the assembly house getting parts swapped and don't know for sure of version of silicon until we get those boards back and connect to JTAG.

    2) eStore web order - NOTE it says Mouser, but parts come from Digikey.

    3) Photo of "BAD" silicon v2.0.

photo of email from Digikey - they are very concerned that the solder temperature profile may have reversed the silicon from v2.1 to v2.0 and changed the markings (I'm kidding in an attempt to keep a sense of humor).   Pretty gutsy asking for a customer review of digikey.

  • Received another order of parts from Digikey / cc1310 7x7 128K and here's an image.   Markings are different and one our team believes it is April 2018  (84) - can you please confirm.    We have very little margin in our board build schedule for our CES demo and it would be painful given the holidays to remedy if the boards get stuffed with the wrong stuff.   Thanks TER for the assist and have a good Thanksgiving.

  • Yes, that is a device from April 2018.

Hope you manage to get a demo up for CES!
  • Boards are assembled and v2.1 silicon confirmed - demo works great.    Digikey RMA also sent replacements that were v2.1 as well.

We will be ramping production in 1Q2019 and will work with distributor and assembly house on insuring the correct version - wish there was a unique order number for the v2.1 silicon.

    Thanks for the support.
