SmartRF Packet Sniffer 2 Wireshark plugin installation fails with message "Wireshark not installed"

Hi there,

we are getting the above message while installing Packet Sniffer 2 despite following the given procedure. Searching the forum we run into the Smart RF Packet Sniffer documentation saying 'It is important to use Wireshark 3.0.x ....'

However we double checked and Wireshark is installed in c.\Program Files\Wireshark however we downloaded and used the latest Wireshark Version 3.4.0 .´. Is the statement in the documentation absolute and the issue is the Wireshark version ? We understand that this is backward versioning related and anyone would expect that newer versions are OK to use.

So what is causing the install error and how to fix it.

OS is native WIN10 pro

Best wishes

Ralph

  • For your reference, I can use Packet Sniffer 2 with Wireshark Version 3.2.6 without problem and I think it should be no problem to use 3.4.0 too.

  • Correct, I agree, however then TI has to answer the question why is Wireshark not detected at installation time if WS is in the right directory?

And what are the steps to install the required files manually?

    Best wishes

    Ralph

  • You can copy those necessary files into plugin folder manually.

  • I know, but which files to which folder. time is money! Ti should regularly verify their tools to install without hassle. It is hard to explain to any management why to go and spend time reading user guides on those basic issues, if such an issue is explained there at all.

    Thanks

    Ralph

  • I am not TI employee and I can not speak for TI. But, In , the note already mentions:

If the three TI dissector plugins (ti802154ge-x(86/64)-2x.dll, tirpi-x(86/64)-2x.dll and ti-ble-packet-info-(x86/64)-2x.dll) are not shown , try one of the following:

verify that Wireshark are installed at default location and then run the SmartRF Packet Sniffer 2 installer again, or

copy the plugin files manually from SmartRF Packet Sniffer 2 install location (<install_dir>\wireshark\plugins\3.0.x) to Wireshark plugins folder (<wireshark_install_dir>\plugins\3.0\epan). Use the x86 version of plugins if you have a 32 bits installation of Wireshark or the x64 if you have a 64 bits version of Wireshark installed.

  • Hi Ralph.

Since Wireshark 3.4.0 was released some days ago, there might be combability issues between SmartRF Packet Sniffer and the new version of Wireshark. We will test to see if this is the case, but in the mean time I recommend that you use a earlier supported version of Wireshark.

    Regards,
    Vegard

  • Hi Vegard,

thank you for reaching out for this. Indeed WS 3.4.0 is brand new. Therefor details helping you out to nail down the issue.

Operarting system is WIN 10 pro 64 latest version and updates.

Wireshark installs as 64 bit version in C:\Program Files\Wireshark

Wireshark.exe exists in that directory. Case sensitive as written (may be the issue? )

The installer does not recognize wireshark and say not installed. That is the only issue I encountered so far.

    Best wishes

  • Hi Ralph.

We have done some testing, and as you say, the SmartRF Packet sniffer is not compatible with WS 3.4.0. A SmartRF Packet Sniffer with support for WS 3.4.0 will be released in January.

    Vegard

  • Hi Vegard,

the last Wireshark Version compatible with SmartRF Packet Sniffer Ver 1.8 is Wireshark 3.0.14  !!

Thank you for letting us know ...
