Hello,

I'm using the CC3120MOD (Wi-Fi module) on my device. This is the first time I'm certifying a device for FCC/IC/CE. Please help with understanding the below:-

1) Even though the Module is FCC Certified, there is a need for additional testing for unintentional emissions? Yes/No ?

2) If additional testing needed, how different is this from regular certification?

3) Are we allowed to use a different antenna other than the ones mentioned in the list of antennas?
If we use a differnent antenna, what additional testing is to be done?

4) If the device is using the CC3120 module and the recommended antenna? is additional certification/testing necessary or can we use the same FC certification of the CC3120 Module?

Please advice .

Hi Sanjay,

1, 2, and 4) Yes, I believe you'll need to do a full unintentional emissions test as well as some RF spot-checks like radiated spurious emissions and conducted power verification.

3) Yes, you can use other antennas but it cannot exceed the gain of the antenna type on the list. For example, if you plan to use a Chip antenna, the gain cannot exceed 2.5dBi.

I recommend you check with your test house to confirm.

Thanks for the quick reply Seong,

A follow up question, So the TI module is certified for a higher power level when compared to my use case (attached below) :-

Providing additional information on the power levels, modulation used and Antenna we intend to use.
All 3 types of modulations 1 DSSS, 6 OFDM, and 54 OFDM, respectively, with power level setting [6], a max of 12dBm.

The antenna above has a peak gain of ~3dBi , does this mean its not allowed/ or illegal to use the above antenna with the module when though we're using a low power level?

Please help understand.
