CC3230S: CC3230S MCU wake up issue after power ON

Hello,

I have been using CC3230S in one of my designs. The reset of CC3230 is controlled by MSP430XX controller.

I have power on indication LEDs controlled by CC3230S.

On one of my boards, I have observed that the LEDs do not turn ON and I suspect that CC3230S is not getting initialized. This behavior is pretty much intermittent and sometimes the power LED glows.

In firmware, there is a delay time of 2sec added for CC3230 to initialize and it is working fine on all other boards.

Is there anyone who has faced similar issue?

Hi,

What is your SOP mode? Do you have connected RX line (GPIO2) to other device or do you use pull-up at this UART RX pin? Do you use module or QFN?

Hi Jan,

The SOP mode is LDfrUART_Fn4WJ.

GPIO 2 is not connected to any other pins it is used for programming only. Pull provision is there in hardware but it is not connected on board.

We are using individual chipset and not module.

Hi,

In SOP mode 0-1-0 you need to have proper state of RX pin, because according state of RX pin is determining enter into UART loader mode. You have options:

use pull-up at RX pin
use different SOP mode than 0-1-0

Hi Jan,

Thanks for the solution. The board performance seems to be improved. I just checked on the SOP mode and seems that the device is entering UART break mode sometimes. This was really helpful. I will post it here in case I get any more queries.

Hello,

Facing the similar issue again.

CC3230 is not getting wake up after reset.

We have connected pull up on UART RX and TX line.

After programming the device, we are disconnecting the Pull up at SOP1 for battery current optimization purpose. So basically SOP1 is floating during operation.

Any idea is it causing such issue?

Hi,

Floating SOP pins are not according recommendations at CC3230 datasheet.

By keepings inputs digital pins floating you generally achieve opposite effect. This approach best way how to increase power consumption at any low power MCU.

Thanks Jan for your response.

Now I have connected the SOP pin and UART pull ups. But I see that the board is still not working.

Also I have observed that if we connect some external GND like power supply GND or DMM GND, the device works.

It is happening for 20-25 boards out of 500 boards, rest are working okay .

Also just wanted to say that device is powered through battery and still it expects external GND

Hi,

Hard do say what can be wrong with your design. It look like a layout issue. Maybe around internal DC-DC, who knows...

At first step you can ask TI for review of your design. But debugging of your hardware will be likely up-to you only. Finding real reason for such issue may to be very tricky, maybe you can ask for help for someone else with experience at that field.
