WL1837MOD: Ignoring 802.11ax health packets

WiFi team,

Our customer is using the WL1837MOD as a station. When they connect to 802.11ax APs (Wi-Fi 6), the health packets cause the WL1837 to wake up too often through the WoWLAN, about every 5 seconds. This is impacting battery life of their system. Is it possible to keep WoWLAN enabled but not respond to the health packets? How do they do this?

Hi Darren,

What kind of packets would they normally like to wake up to? What are they currently setting? Could they share the specific wowlan magic that they are currently using?

Furthermore, there are types of packets that can trigger a wakeup. Please read through section 6 in its entirety in this document, and specifically section 6.4 magic packet: https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/swru576/swru576.pdf

Hi Sabeeh,

The "host" will send a TCP packet to this device about once/minute when this device is idle. The WoWLAN pattern looks like this:

Hi Darren,

Could you try setting the filter to the TCP port? Something like the second row in this table (I believe 13:89 corresponds to 5001):

They followed this advice, and the AP is still waking the device. This is the output:

That is really interesting. Could you ask the customer to perform a WiFi wireshark sniffer capture? I can then go over the logs to see which packets are causing wakeup, it will help understand what is going on.

I emailed you two log files. One is the customer log file from the linux command prompt, and one is the wireshark log.
