CC3100MODR11MAMOBR not able to connect to a dual band router with same SSID name for both 2.4G and 5G network

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC3100MOD, CC3100, CC3200

We have a device using CC3100MOD as Wifi interface. Our customer complained that the device not able to connect to their router which are dual band and has same SSID for both 2.4G and 5G network. It connected to 2.4G network ok after setting different SSID for 2.4G and 5G network. Test verified customer's issue.

Question: Is this a bug in CC3100 module? Is there a way (or newer FW) to fix this?

Thanks

Jane

  • Hi Jane,

Because CC3100 does not support 5GHz WiFi it cannot be affected by using 5GHz at AP. That means this need to be related to router / AP itself (bug inside AP, settings issue, etc.).

  • Hi Jan,

    Thanks for your response.

If I understand right, you mean CC3100 shouldn't be able to detect 5G beacon. It should only detect 2.4G beacon and send out probe on 2.4G, correct?

In my test, my router has set same SSID for both 2.4G and 5G network. My old IPAD 3 which are 2.4G only can connect to this router ok while the device with CC3100 can't. The same device connects to other 2.4G only network ok.

    Have a clue?

    Thanks

  • My mistake, my ipad is IPad air 2 which has 5G capability. I'll try check my router's setting.

  • Hi,

Yes, CC3100 device have 2.4GHz radio only. This means that the CC3100 knows nothing about the fact that your AP have 5 GHz support.

  • More information, I tried another device (Roborock S5) which has 2.4G only (100% sure), it connects to the same router ok. Only the device with cc3100 can't.

  • Hi,

Can you test with different router / AP? I have done test with CC3200 (same network processor as CC3100) with UniFi AC LR and Turris Omnia (with OpenWRT) and it worked without any issue. I used latest Service Pack inside CC3200.

What exact model of AP / router do you use? Do you have capability to capture 2.4GHz communication from CC3100?

  • Thanks Jan. While I was trying to get more data my device this time worked fine connecting to the same router (nothing changed). Not sure what happened before or on customer site.

I'll close this thread, thanks for your help.
