CC1350: What is the maximum range that should be possible?

Part Number: CC1350
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ENERGIA

Hi Experts,

We need your assistance on this matter.

The customer is using CC1350 for RF communication but is not able to get enough range. What is the maximum range that should be possible?
They get only a few meters less than 20 meters and they tested the CC1350 launchpad with RF studio, this is with an external Sub GHZ antenna with the Energia and CCS, the range is even less.
Here is the latest update from them during our conversation.
  1. The best practical range that we are getting in our test is less than 10 meters
  2. The CC1350 board we are using is a 433 MHz
  3. Please find attached some configurations that I tested in Energia. HERE is the link to the setup and other details.
We need a range of at least 400 meters for our project, we are using Energia IDE for current development. Looking forward to your suggestions.
Thank you in advance for your support.
Best regards,
Jonathan
  • Hi Jonathan,

Please can you provide the settings used in a format other than Google Docs? A .zip would be fine for this.

    • Please see SWRA603 (Debugging Communication Range): https://www.ti.com/lit/swra603 as a starting point for debugging this.
    • Please share the SmartRF Studio settings used for the CC1350. It is probably the best approach to find the settings to achieve the customer's desired range using SmartRF Studio first in this instance.
    • Is the whip antenna definitely designed for 433 MHz operation?

    Regards,

    Zack

  • Hi Zack,

    Thank you for waiting.

Please find the customer's answer below.
    • Please see SWRA603 (Debugging Communication Range): https://www.ti.com/lit/swra603 as a starting point for debugging this. - Noted, i am checking this, thanks.

Since we are using energia, this is the default library that contains these configuration files, C:\Users\jatin\OneDrive\Documents\Energia\libraries\EasyLink
    • Is the whip antenna definitely designed for 433 MHz operation? - Yes this is specifically a 433Mhz 5Dbi Magnetic Antenna

  • Hi Jonathan,

I'll await the customer's progress once they have followed the steps in the App Note. It may be that this thread gets locked in the meantime - if so, please create a new one (it should be possible to reference this one when creating it so that it's clear that it's a follow-on).

    Regards,

    Zack
