LAUNCHXL-CC3235SF: Programming the CC3235SF without the launchpad

Hello,

I am new to all of this, and I am sorry if this is an ignorant question!

I have been developing on the CC3235SF launchpad for a little bit here, and am ready to make a prototype project board. However, I am new to programming these chips without a usb/serial interface! My previous experience has been mostly with Arduino devices.

  1. Do you offer some sort of external usb programming device for flashing the CC3235SF?
  2. If there is a device available, which device pins would I need to break out?
  3. Is there a guide for newbies available?

    Hi Dan,

    This depends on what you exactly needs. If you want to debug at your hardware from CCS or you want to just to program final hardware.

    • For debugging you will need to connect JTAG (4-wire JTAG or 2-wire SWD)
    • For programming via ROM bootloader you will need to connect UART (RX, TX)
    • SOP lines for settings of bootloader mode
    • Control for reset pin can be useful of CC3235

    Advantage of LAUNCHXL-CC3235SF that it contains XDS-110 debugger. This debugger you can disconnect from internal CC3235 QFN chip and connect them your your own hardware. For your first hardware I will strongly recommand to use CC3235MOD instead of CC3235 QFN. For CC3235 QFN you will need to design 4-layer PCB. MOD can be used with 2-layers board, but it is harder for soldering.

    For full debug / development capability your should connect (pins of CC3235MOD).

    • UART pins for flashing 46, 47
    • SWD for debug 21, 22
    • nRESET pin 35
    • SOP pins 23, 24, 34
    • GND
    • maybe can be good idea to left free pin 52 for NWP log (just for case)

    For more details see design checklist, schematic for your MOD LaunchPad, etc. After you will have your deign done, you can ask TI here for review of your design.

    btw... be aware that pins of QFN and MOD package are not same. You may to check production line guide too.

    But is you don't want to use XDS-110 form LP, you can buy stand alone XDS-110. But I think better is to use XDS-110 from LP (less issues and you save $135 :)).
