WL1835MOD: RF performance (output power) not achieving 20dBm as configured

Part Number: WL1835MOD

TI Friends & Family,

Our customer has an RF performance (output power) inquiry for our WiLink8 (WL1835MOD) series as follows (with initial customer inquiry, followed by initial TI reply, followed by latest customer reply):

(CUSTOMER) We are connected external antenna of WL1835MOD to spectrum analyzer as shown below figure and measured power levels. When we are checking power levels of the module by using following command

 calibrator wlan0 wl18xx_plt set_tx_power 20000 0 0 13 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0

observed that for 20000 power level is 11.5dBm and 15000 power level  is  10.7dBm, we are not seeing much power difference. Please find the screenshots of the power levels with this email.

But ideally for 20000 power level we should get approximately 20dBm and for 15000 power level we should get approximately 15dBm.

Please suggest how to fix this issue.

(TI RESPONSE THUS FAR)

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Realize first, since we’re dealing with RF, the optimal output power level depends on many factors such as antenna, PCB layout, etc – in addition to obviously the SW configuration and internal setup.  We appreciate the picture you attached – but what I’d like to do is simply start an E2E thread on this so we can involve our WiLink8 applications team directly.

I can go ahead and do that for you – using the info you provided below (removing any names/IP) – unless you prefer to do that?  Please let me know.

In the meantime, the Output power is indeed set by the INI file.  We have a Guide describing the critical INI functions here: https://www.ti.com/lit/an/swru422a/swru422a.pdf Particularly Section 4 and 6.  And another guide to re-compile the INI into "wl18xx-conf.bin" found here. https://www.ti.com/lit/an/swra489/swra489.pdf

Also, could you share the wl18xx-conf.bin file with us perhaps so we can review?

(CUSTOMER REPLY)

Attached bin file.  Thank you.

Appreciate any input the team may have on this.  Thank you !

TY,
