Yes, the linux driver does support SPI interface. Although, it is not preferred compared to SDIO. The CC33x supports maximum communication clock of 52 MHz, as per datasheet specification. So SPI can only operate that fast. Whereas with SDIO using 4bit bus width data the maximum is 200 Mbps.

The limitation is certainly communication speed. It is unstable because it is not as well tested compared to SDIO.

It is difficult to provide a timeline for upstreaming because the community and maintainers dictate if the driver can be accepted or not. However, upstreaming the cc33xx driver into mainline is a goal for us.

Yes. Today we have support for the M2-CC3301 (http://www.ti.com/tool/m2-cc3301) which can be attached to any of the AM6x EVMs that have an M.2 connector. We have separate patches that apply onto the AM6x SDK. So we build CC33xx ontop of the PSDK.

The issue with AM69 EVMs is that SDIO is routed is not routed to the M.2 Key E connector so the CC3301 can not communicate to the AM69. The driver should still work on AM69, but the hardware must be supported first.
