CC3351: Is there an option for a Wi-Fi + BLE IC (such as the CC33xx series) with UART interface for the WLAN interface?

Hello,

I am looking to integrate IoT functionality into an exisitng system that only has a UART interface available.

Looking at the CC3351 chipset and some 3rd party modules this solution looks close to meeting my needs except that this chip and the others I've reviewed use UART to interface with the BLE and some other protocol when interfacing with the WLAN (often SDIO). I was wondering if there are any Wi-Fi + BLE OR Wi-Fi only ics that i could interface to with UART? Or an SoC solution that can support a UART interface with some kind of pass-through operaiton to utilize the WLAN.

Hi Austin,

While the CC3351 does not support UART for WiFi, it does support communication for SPI as well as SDIO. The UART on CC3351 is dedicated for BLE communication. Do you intend to use the CC3351 in a Linux or MCU hosted environment?

Hi Sebeeh,

Sorry if my question was not clear. But I am constrained to UART being the required interface. I would like to know if there are other chipsets that could provide UART for WiFi. I do not require the use of the CC3351.

Hi Austin,

If your host device is a linux MPU then unfortunately we don't have a simple solution.

If it is a device running FreeRTOS or nortos, then you could use the CC3120. https://ti.com/product/cc3120 We have the simplelink sdk wifi plugin where you could control this device via UART.
