CC3235MODSF: How to keep connection with an AP as long as possible?

Part Number: CC3235MODSF

Tool/software:

Hello,

Any idea or tips for keeping connection with an AP as long as possible?

I'm using tx power to max and "Low Power" as power policy.

Would it work to change "Low Power" to "Low Latency" or "Always On" for this purpose?

Thanks,

Calvin

  • Hi Calvin,

Generally this depends on AP side and environmental conditions (signal strength, etc.).

But if power consumption is not important to you, you can use Always On policy. This disable WiFi power save modes, and it can increase compatibility with some APs which not properly handles WiFi power save modes. This policy increase power consumption of module and slightly increase power dissipation of module.

btw ... it is always good to use latest SDK and ServicePack.

  • Hi Jan,

Thank you for your help but could you explain more specific?

What exactly are the benefits of using the "Always On" policy?

Can it affect performance to improve connectivity with an AP?

Or is it only beneficial for compatibility as you said?

    Thanks,

    Calvin

  • Hi Calvin,

I think at my previous answer I was pretty specific. Usage of Always On policy is mainly about improving interoperability. Usage of maximum RX power may to be beneficial in term of range.

Crucial factor for good connection is proper antenna design and RF path. Antenna design need to be properly calculated and validated at real hardware (e.g. using VNA). This validation need to be done at device with all enclosures and at expected use case. Be aware that even plastic enclosure may significantly affect antenna performance (loading antenna and shifting resonance frequency of antenna).

What exact issue do you see, that you asking such questions?

  • I was wondering if using "always on" would provide any additional benefits beyond power savings, especially range.

  • Hi,

Usage of Always On policy will not improve range. Make sure that you have set proper country code, because it affects TX power.

If your range is worse that CC3235 LaunchPad it is likely due to issue with your hardware design.
