WL1837MOD: software related question autorization, changing bluetooth parameters, DLE, connection intervals

Part Number: WL1837MOD

Tool/software:

Hello Team,

can you help to answer the questions?

We have a TI module WL18xXMOD in a project.
We have questions about the software.

- Can the TI module be configured without special authorization?
- Is special firmware required for the module in order to change the Bluetooth parameters?
- Are there any restrictions regarding Bluetooth?
- What performance settings are there?
- Does the module enable DLE (Data Length Extension)?
- Is it only possible to make programmatic changes with proprietary stacks? (e.g. changing connection intervals etc.)
- Is the performance of Bluetooth impaired by the parallel Wi-Fi connection?

  • Hi Jan,

I'll try to answer most of the questions while the remaining I'll need to check with others internally or need some clarification:

    - Can the TI module be configured without special authorization?

What kind of configuration are you referring to?

    - Is special firmware required for the module in order to change the Bluetooth parameters?

No, all the parameters are built into the BTS. On the WiFi side, there are RF parameters you can change that are within the INI file: https://git.ti.com/cgit/wilink8-wlan/18xx-ti-utils/tree/wlconf/example.ini

    - Are there any restrictions regarding Bluetooth?

The WL18xx devices feature dual-mode Bluetooth 5.1 spec, so the devices are restricted to what is within this specification. I'm not sure of any other limitation you may be referring to.

    - What performance settings are there?

I'm not sure, let me try to find out more.

    - Does the module enable DLE (Data Length Extension)?

I will need to check but I do not believe so.

    - Is it only possible to make programmatic changes with proprietary stacks? (e.g. changing connection intervals etc.)

That is correct. You can use either BlueZ or Bluetopia stack to change bluetooth connection parameters or types.

    - Is the performance of Bluetooth impaired by the parallel Wi-Fi connection?

No. The WL18xx has internal coexistence such that the WiFi and Bluetooth can be active at the same time and maintain respective connections.

  • Here additional input from the customer:

In short, we need to establish a high-performance BT connection to the PC or mobile devices and do not know how to increase the payload (length of the transmitted data block). Somehow, somewhere, an agreement has to be reached between Mobile and our embedded VCI.

  • Lets consider this closed for now.

Once you have additional information from the customer specific issue, open a dedicated thread and I can assign a BLE/BT engineer to it.
