CC3350: CC3350 External Fast Clock Input

Part Number: CC3350

Tool/software:

Hi,

Is it possible to use an external 40MHz clock input with the CC33xx series of WiFi Modem ICs? (In our case the CC3350).

I would like to use the clock output of our main MPU (IMX93) to generate the required 40MHz clock to save cost.

If possible, what are the requirements for this clock signal?

Thanks for you help!

Best,
Moritz

  • Hey Moritz,

Unfortunately, this device currently doesn't support this functionality. It is a feature that can be enabled potentially in the future, but the expectation is for this to be leveraged for TCXOs. This device supports XTAL operation which is the desired method due to the lower cost so there is not yet a case we have identified to enable this feature in the FW. The noise and accuracy requirements needed for the 5Ghz operation are likely too stringent to be met by a MPU source so I wouldn't expect this specific scenario to be supported.
