CC3220SF: Alternatives to the CC3220SF in the TI lineup

Part Number: CC3220SF
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC3235SF, CC3551E

Tool/software:

Hello,

We have been using the MCU CC3220SF for our applications on the past few years, it is a serviceable and efficient part, however we feel like it is becoming a bit outdated. Therefore we have been looking for suggestions on other TI MCUs that we could use in its place. Our requirements are:

  • It needs to support RTOS
  • It needs to have WiFi capabilities
  • Better performance and support than the CC3220SF

It'd be nice if it was compatible with 5G from the box.

Any suggestion will be highly appreciated.

  • Hi Daniel,

As successor of CC3220SF we can talk about two types of devices.

    CC3235SF

    • it will add capability of 5GHz and 16 TLS sockets
    • CC3235 use same SDK as CC3220SF and transition will be pretty simple
    • but there will be same limitations as CC3220SF (NWP supports TLS 1.2 only, EAP security supports TLS 1.0 only)
    • SDK is at LTS state (that means no new features but only security fixes). This is same as CC3220

    CC3551E

    • brand new device including 5GHz and BLE and WiFi-6
    • less mature platform, software side is still at development
    • higher permeance of MCU (Cortex-M33@160MHz) and some new features
    • TCP/IP and TLS stack at host MCU not inside NWP like at CC3220
    • this device is a "future", but harder transition from CC3220 than CC3235
