CC3000 What kind of chip is it?

I bought a CC3000  TiWi-SL from LS Research, part #450-0067.

What do you call the IC packaging type of 450-0067?  I bought just the chip, not an EM because I want to interface it with an Atmega microprocessor, and I need to know what kind of packaging it is so I can buy an adapter to attach it to a breadboard.

One person on the internet said it was a 40 pin vqfn-type chip, but those have 10 pins on each side, not 9 on two sides, 11 on two sides, and 4 in the middle.

The specification just says "tray", which is not enough for me to find the right socket or converter.

  • The TiWi-SL from LS Research is a module.  A description of this module can be found on the LS Research website below.

There is a diagram illustrating the contents of the module in addition to the CC3000 itself.

  • I've been through the documents.  There is no information on the type of chip packaging in there.  Someone on another forum mentiond that the chip packaging is non-standard and to use it I would need to have my own board fabricated and then reflow solder the chip on.  This, of course, is unless I want to use one of the evaluation boards offered with the chip and antenna, which I am trying to avoid.

  • This is correct.  You will need to design your own printed circuit board to accept the module and connect to your MCU of choice.
