Is it possible to wake the CC3000 from sub-uA low-power mode over WiFi, or does it need to wake up periodically to check if someone needs it?

In the sub uA mode the part is in shutdown, meaning the receiver is disabled.

I guess I will have to have it periodically woken up. There are ways to wake a module without it being powered on, but it requires additional low-power circuitry to detect and decode the wake-up signal. A clever design has just been proposed by Kondo, et el (Energy-efficient WLAN with on-demand AP wake-up using IEEE 802.11 frame length modulation), but I think it would have to be mass produced to make economical sense, at least for my application.
