CC3000 WiFi signal strength

Hi TI employees,

I have 2 question about CC3000 WiFi signal strength. From CC3000 datasheet, it spec out the Tx power and Receiver sensitivity as below

  • TX power: +18.0 dBm at 11 Mbps, CCK
  • RX sensitivity: –88 dBm, 8% PER, 11 Mbps

So, if we buy CC3000MOD and load the patch (v1.12) into the module. The default data on EEPROM is it already set as maximum transmit power and the best sensitivity ?

Do TI have any optional design (hardware) for increase the Tx power or Rx sensitivity ?

Thanks

Roderick

  • You cannot increase the TX power and RX sensitivity using the provided software API. Also there is no hardware setting on the CC3000 to increase it. But in my experience the CC3000 is already pretty amazing in terms of TX power and RX sensitivity.

The device I am designing connects to open WiFi networks while driving your car, so RF performance is also very important to me. I evaluated the CC3000BOOST and CC3000EM boards and they both can connect to APs so far away that my laptop can't even see. The biggest challenge is to maintain this performance in your own board by strictly following the RF PCB design rules.
