Ivor: in the future I would recommend combining both your questions into the same post.
To answer both, the availability date has not been released by TI -- however, the Launchpad is available for order through their WebShop, so it can't be too far off. The chip itself is generally not available until a while after the Launchpad has been circulating, if the Tiva C is any indication (unless you're a big company that TI partners with, but if you were you'd already know the answer).
As far as price, any answer would surely be speculation. We'll just have to wait and see. Keep checking the TI main website, at the CC3100 page, and also check their distributors (ie Newark, Mouser)
Hi Alexander,
Thanks for answering my post, but the information that you have is pretty much what I was able to gather from TI's website. I would be happy if someone from TI who has more specific information and is allowed to share it can answer.
This line hasn't even 'officially' been launched; the information on the website is mostly still in preview stage. None of the TI employees will be able to release any more information until after the official launch.
To be honest, I was surprised the SDK was available for download. I have a feeling it won't be too long until the rest of the software and info is ready.
It was definitely launched in "Preview" mode a couple of days ago. When is it going to be available in "Active" mode is another question that I asked in another thread.
I think this information is very important to early adapters at this stage, since it helps one decide whether to be an early adapter or not. It is definitely in TI's interest to release this information sooner rather than later, since they will gather more early adapters, which in turn will help clean out bugs sooner as well as get more exposure. The two unknowns (price and general availability) are definitely preventing me from getting on the early adapter band wagon right now and I am guessing its preventing others as well.
As far as official announcements go, TI has not been very proactive in this department. For example when the latest version of the CC3000 firmware was released, there was no official announcement whatsoever.
