WL18xx issue - ERROR SW watchdog interrupt received!

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: WL1835, AM3352

Hi

We are using wl18xx (wifi + BT) module for our custom board,

In one of our custom board we are facing an issue, when the wlan0 tries to acquire IP we could see some interrupt messages on the console ,

While probing the interrupt line during these error occurs we were able to see some activity on the interrupt line of wl1835.

What might be the issue?

Note: We tested the same SD on another boards and seems working fine,

The output on the console is as follows...

root@arm:~# ifup wlan0

  • Hi,

Can you confirm how you have configured the WLAN_IRQ line? (Input/Output)?
    Level triggered/Edge triggered?

    Regards,
    Gigi Joseph.

  • Hi Joseph

The configurations doesn't seem to have any problem since the same SD card image was able to operate wifi successfully on another board (we developed some custom boards and only one among this was showing this issue.

What else can cause this behavior?

    Regards

  • Hi,

    Can you please elaborate?
The same WL8 module works with the same image on another platform?

    Regards,
    Gigi Joseph.

  • Hi

We have developed 7 custom boards (SOM jorjinATBN441JS (DM3715) with WL1835 wifi+bt module).

Out of these 7 boards 1 is showing the error as I have mentioned above.

Please note I have used the same SD card Image (Linux 3.12 kernel)  for verification of the boards.

    Regards

  • Hi,

It then sounds like an issue with the specific board, right?

    Regards,
    Gigi Joseph.

  • Hi Joseph

Yes , it is a issue with the specific board .

Can you guide us to identify what might be causing the issue based on those errors?

    Regards

  • Hi,

I was just checking your dmesg file, and was wondering if it is possible to check with the latest release (R8.4). Looks like some of the recovery that you see is addressed in the latest release. Still don't know why it can happen on a specific board, but I think its worth a try.

    Regards,
    Gigi Joseph.

  • Hello All,

We have successfully ported R8.4 Release on our customized AM3352 Board. But we are facing the same watchdog issue. We have tested this with TPLINK,Belkin,LinkSys Wifi Routers. For particular Linksys Wifi router model WRT54G ver 7.We are facing above. As we increase the timeout above 500( file ps.c ).This resetting time decreases but still exist.I am providing the log of Linux Kernel 3.2 version we are using.

    Regards

    Nitish Mehta

  • Hi Nitish,

Under what scenario are you getting this?
What interrupt trigger are you using (Level/Edge)?

As in the original post, are you getting this issue only on specific boards or all?
Can you share the complete boot logs?

Lastly, I see that you are using 8.9.0.0.30 version. Can you try the official version and see if it helps (git://git.ti.com/wilink8-wlan/wl18xx_fw.git tag: ol_r8.a9.14)?

    Regards,
    Gigi Joseph.

  • Hi Nitish,

I am also facing the same issue randomly in a different platform. Are you able to find out the cause for this issue?. I really appreciate if you could share.

    Thanks,
    Ijaz Fazily
  • Was a solution ever found for this? On my BeagleBone Green Wireless, the serial console is flooded with this message every few seconds:

[25010.455311] wlcore: ERROR SW watchdog interrupt received! starting recovery.
[25012.595669] wlcore: ERROR SW watchdog interrupt received! starting recovery.

[25024.317340] wlcore: ERROR SW watchdog interrupt received! starting recovery.
[25027.337897] wlcore: ERROR SW watchdog interrupt received! starting recovery.
  • If it matters or helps anyone else experiencing this issue, I just noticed that bringing the interface down and back up again "fixes" the problem. Until the next device reboot anyway...

    sudo ifconfig wlan0 down
    sudo ifconfig wlan0 up

Will write a cron job to look for that error message in /var/log/syslog and toggle wlan0 when it detects it, but would much rather understand the "real" cause and how to fix it.

CORRECTION:  While this seems to have helped once earlier this morning, I've been unable to correct the problem since.  Bringing the interface down & up is not a workaround, and rebooting doesn't help either.

This is what the error looks like in /var/log/syslog every few seconds:

  • Please make sure you are using the latest debian image for the BBGW (>r59)
There is a hardware issue with the BBGW where the BT_AUD_OUT is not pulled low during power up and wilink8 ends up in an illegal state.

This was the reason for all the WLP wakeup timeouts, recoveries etc.
The work around for this is part of the latest debian image.

    BR,
    Eyal
  • Hi,

Please check the following link on upgrading your linux kernel in the image to the latest:
    elinux.org/BeagleBoardDebian

    Check the following part:

    Install Latest Kernel Image

General apt syntax for searching and installing a specific kernel:

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-cache search linux-image | grep <branch>
    sudo apt-get install linux-image-<specific version>
    sudo reboot

I believe latest version is: 4.4.30-ti-r64

    BR,
    Eyal

  • Yes, i think this one should be ok.
