Interfacing the CC3200 with SIM Card

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC3200, AM3358

Hello,

I am trying to write an application that I need to control stuff remotely without Wi-Fi, I find the CC3200 is very interesting but is it possible to have it interact with SIM card?

If not or if it isn't optimized to that, what is the best MCU that can be used for SIM card interaction?

Thanks

  • When you say SIM card, I am assuming you are talking about a device that can use a cellular network? If so, the CC3200 is Wifi not GSM, GPRS, 3G, 4G etc.

You can checkout this - http://www.ti.com/general/docs/wtbu/wtbuproductcontent.tsp?templateId=6123&navigationId=12772&contentId=30167&DCMP=WTBU&HQS=Other+OT+tcs2315

But I am going to hazard to guess that from your question, that you are not likely in a position to develop products for the cellular network.

    Glenn.

  • Thanks Glenn for your input... Actually no, I am just trying to do smaller projects. I actually need to build a device that can act as a hotspot or a Wifi for other devices but supplying internet through the cellular network. That is why I was asking if CC3200 can interface with a SIM card to get data from it.

I don't have a lot of experience with how cellular data work. But if there is a TI part that can actually stream this data through the network then interface it with CC3200 that will be my need. Please if you have an idea about that I will be really grateful

    Thanks

  • Hi Mohamed,

In my understanding you need a 3G, 4G modem with Sim support. If the modem supports external interface such as SPI, you can attach 3200 to it.

  • Yeah that is exactly what I need. I was wondering if TI make such devices. I came across the TCS family but I can't find enough data about pricing or where to get them from. the OMAP family also are interesting but TI.com is somehow not very helpful :).

Please if you have like direct links to these families and any recommendation about which of them is the simplest to use. I will be really grateful

  • Mohammed,

I am your local (Cedar Rapids) TI contact for all our products.  Tried leaving you a voicemail the last couple weeks when my apps support was in town.   I would recommend an AM3358 processor.

    http://www.ti.com/product/AM3358?keyMatch=AM3358&tisearch=Search-EN

These are very low cost and have SD/MMC support, Ethernet, SPI and USB in case you need to interface with a hard modem.   Don't post your number on here, but I can call you to discuss with my FAE if you would like.  Just send me a time.

    Regards,

    Aaron
