CC3200 and Serial Flash Speed

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC3200

While trying to reduce the footprint, cost and complexity of my future PCB, I concluded the most obvious first step was to do away with all the level shifters for Digital I/O when running the CC3200 in wide voltage 3.3V mode.  Therefore I needed to spec a different serial flash for the CC3200 in pre-regulated 1.85V mode.

When ferreting out a replacement that is preferably from Macronix as I have done quite a bit of research on their products, I noticed that the speed of the various serial flash that have been tested with the CC3200 and are recommended in the Datasheet have different speeds.  From 75Mhz on up.  Is it the case then, that the speed of the serial flash is irrelevant and it is only the commands that it must support as per the Wiki and the Datasheet that are important?

For instance, some serial flash tested as per the Datasheet are...

S25FL208K Spansion 8MB 76Mhz
W25Q16V Winbond Electronics 80Mhz
AT25DF081A Adesto Technologies 100Mhz

Thanks in advance.

  • The serial flash interface on our CC3200 operates at a max frequency of 20MHz. So any serial flash capable of operating beyond 20MHz should be accepatable. A faster device would have better timing margins and so may be recommended for extended temperature and voltage operations.
