WiLink8 power consumption at different transmit powers

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: WL1831MOD

Hi all,

We are planning to use WL1831MOD for one of our designs.

"WLAN currents" section of the datasheet details the average current consumption of the module for different operating conditions.

We are planning to use the module in "2.4-GHz TX 20 M SISO MCS7" mode as this mode supports data rate up to 65Mbps.

Datasheet specifies the current consumption for this mode to be 238mA at 11.2dBm transmit power.

Since we are looking for a power effective design, we are planning to reduce the transmit power. We understand that we can set the transmit power using "output_power" parameter as detailed in this wiki link.

Can you please share some chart/link which specifies the current consumption at different transmit powers for the above mode.

This will help us to determine the power saving we can achieve by reducing the transmit power and we can decide on the trade off between WLAN range & power consumption.

Looking forward to response.

Thanks,

  • Hi,

The question is too general, the rate been used is depended on the link quality.

The device will go through rates depending on the link, therefor we need to consider worst case currents consumption and we can’t address to a single rate.

Can you please share your end product, system requirements, and worst case demands?
With that information we can discuss optimizing the power consumption in order to meet the system requirements.

  • Hi,

Our system will have a 3G/4G module along with the WLAN module. We will be configuring the WLAN as a Wi-Fi Hotspot & will be streaming the data received from the 3G/4G module.

One of the use case will be that our system will be very close (only few inches away) from the device which is accessing the Wi-Fi Hotspot. We are calculating the power requirement for this use case & since the devices are close to each other, we are planning to reduce the transmit power.

What do you think will be the appropriate transmit power for this use case ? Also, can you share the current consumption details for this transmit power for the selected mode (2.4-GHz TX 20 M SISO MCS7) ?

Let me know if you need any more information.

    Thanks,
