Using a CC3200 to connect an Acoustic guitar with a foot pedal and the internet

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC3200

I thought some of you all might have an interest in my project. You can download the document here.  Just click the download button when the Space Monkey page appears in your browser.  This project uses a CC3200 and a BT module to connect a guitar with a VO-96 Acoustic Synthesis device installed to the cloud, an Ableton Live DAW, and an accelerometer based foot pedal.

  • Absolutely insane project, well done!

I'm a little confused about what it does, I have read some of your extensive documentation. But without having to read it all, can you provide a high level architecture or description that explains what this project does and what is the purpose of Internet enabling your Guitar Synthesizer?

I know a lot about the CC3200 and music production, I have used Ableton and even owned a Moog Voyager, still have a bunch of synths. But still not exactly sure what the purpose of connecting all of this is for. Perhaps an Introduction section before explaining the technical details is required.....or a youtube video that demos the technology in use.

  • Hi Glenn,

The VO-96 functions by applying effects to the guitar strings via transducers. Effects include intensity, harmonic emphasis, and sustain duration. The guitarist can input/change the settings via capacitance sliders. These can have a dramatic impact on the sound produced. For example, put the slider to max sustain, play a note and listen to it to keep playing indefinitely as the the VO-96 keeps the strings vibrating. You can see more about it at www.voinventions.com. Paul Vo is the inventor, and he also the inventor of the Moog guitar. Up to 6 sets of settings can be in the guitar and are selectable via buttons. The idea of an internet connected gateway was to allow extraction and exchange of these settings between VO-96 owners, the downloading of new firmware revisions, and to enable foot pedal control of selected sliders, so a musician can change slider positions while he/she is playing.

    Hope that helps

  • Thanks Peter,

I now understand what this all does. This is a big project, with many technologies used, must have taken some time to do.

  • The VO-96 is a real Product, but what I'm doing is mainly a hobby to keep me busy in retirement. Doubt it will ever become somethingcmarketable, but it has definately been fun.
  • Great to hear you have had fun working on this.

Understood about the marketability....the cost of the whole setup (especially the VO-96), does make this rather a specialist project.

Are you considering open sourcing the code and design?
