External WiFi antenna for CC3200MODLAUNCHXL board.

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC3200MOD

Hi, is it possible to add an external WiFi antenna to CC3200MODLAUNCHXL board? The board has RF connectors, but I am not sure how they are used. Can I use those connectors for an external WiFi antenna?

Thank you.

  • Hi Roman,

Yes, this can be used for external antenna. Please check the "RF connections" - section 2.7 in the Hardware User Guide for more details.

  • Hi Raghavendra, thank you for your reply. Section 2.7 states:

    2.7 RF Connections
    2.7.1 Radiated Testing (AP connection)
By default the board ships with the RF signals routed to the on-board chip antenna. An on-board u.fl
(Murata) connector provides a means to perform the testing in the lab using a compatible cable.

If I understand right the connectors are used for RF testing. I need to use an external antenna to amplify RF signals to get a better RF range. Can I use those connectors to do that. If yes, which one of them I can use?

    Thank you.

  • Hi,

The antenna is not part of the CC3200MOD itself and the user should have the antenna on his board.

The EVM CC3200MODLAUNCHXL has 3 options as mentioned: On board chip antenna, u.fl and muRata connector. The default is the on board chip antenna and this is the option that was taken for the certification.

The other 2 alternatives are provided for users to be able to evaluate with other antenna options and you can use either one. If you use the u.fl you also need to change a resostor on the board to open this path.
