A question about maximum range is a theoretical and complex question.
It depends on many parameters such as antenna and board losses, the peer device capabilties, the medium...

It also depends a lot on what you want to achieve at this distance - is it only keeping connection? Is it also running traffic?
This is why we don't report on distance. We commit to sensitivity on the Rx side and Tx power on the Tx side.
For 11b it is: -97dBm sensitivity and Tx power of ~17dBm - so you have possible attenuation loss of ~114dB. Now the question is where it is being spent.
In general a range of 500m sound to me not that realistic for any WiFi device that respects both 802.11 protocol and regulatory specifications and in most environments.
