CC31xx with FCC/CE certification and possibility to multiple user connected in WiFi direct mode

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC3100, CC3100MOD

Hi,

We have implemented CC3100 in our design with very positive experience. The range is better than expected and the stability is also positive.

We added this CC3100 quite early and we misunderstood the certification regarding FCC/CE and therefore we now need to do a redesign directly. We did find this description http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/CC31xx_%26_CC32xx_Radio_Certifications and understand that the CC3100MOD http://www.ti.com/product/cc3100mod?keyMatch=cc3100mod&tisearch=Search-EN-Everything  is the part we should use.

Before we decide to go on with the CC31xx we have find out one limitation with this circuit in our design that we have today. It can only connect to one user and not multiple user. This could possibly be a reason for us to search for another part/module.

Is there anyone that now an alternative part that can be used for this?

TI have a lots of WiFi module and we have tried to find the correct one for this solution but haven’t find out which one it should be.

Best Regards Henrik

  • Hi Henrik,

    Happy to hear your experience.

Is it possible to share your use-case needing more than 1 client ?

    What's your production schedule ?

  • Hi Geet,
Today a typical is an application there we use our standard power distr. module in combination with tablet. This is then set up with WiFi direct. We are very satisfied with the WiFi link that is stable and also give a longer range than expected. After running the setup for nearly one year we will expand to multiple user. Typical one or two tablet + one or two smartphones (total 3-4). The tablets is fixed mounted and used as control device instead of a traditional switch panel. Then when someone arrive they will use their smartphone before they can have access to the tablet.

Also, when people are in the area close to the unit we can see a fast growing need for control the application from their smartphone in parallel to the tablet. This is where we can see that there can be need for up to six multiple users. This would be very useful but not our need for today.

Regarding our production schedule. We need to change directly to a new part with FCC. Here we found out that the CC3100MOD will work for us. But, we don’t see that it can handle multiple user so we couldn’t go on with it. Urgent for us is to redesign with the correct hardware so we can go on with our FCC test. Less urgent is when we can get the multiple user function. If that could be added later with a new firmware that is ok. Most important is that we can go on with the hardware design and test.

I would be very glad if it would be possible to have some feedback on this as soon as possible because we already working with the design.

If necessary we can share more information if needed (but not all in an open forum).

    Best Regards Henrik
