Uniflash cannot find Flash API

Hi All

I'm just starting out with a CC3100 BoosterPack connected to a TM4C123GLX development board.

After downloading the get_time project the application enters the FaultISR - due to sl_Start failing with error code -1 (ROLE_STA_ERR). It seems that I need to first flash the device before I can use that example. However when trying to flash the device with UniFlash, UniFlash gives the following error.

I verified that the file is in the location specified (I also uninstalled and re-installed UniFlash). None of the solutions seems to work that I found on the forum.

One of the posts on the forum suggested downloading a different dll (2475.FlashAPI.dll), but if I include that file UniFlash crashes.

I'm using this version of UniFlash (Uniflash_3.3.0.00058_win32), which I belief is the latest version, running on Windows 7 64bit.

How do I fix this problem?

Your help is much appreciated.

So basically I will have to throw this (CC3100) dev board in the bin and find some other device to use. It seems I have to do this because the tools (UniFlash) is broken more times than not.

There are several people here that have developed projects using "CC3100 BoosterPack connected to a TM4C123GLX development board", successfully.

You must be encountering some minor setup issues, that I am not familiar of. Just wait for a TI engineer to reply

Hi Steven,

Not sure where you took the FlashAPI.dll from but there was an issue with Windows XP.

Since you are using Windows7, the latest should work.

I am looping in Ricky for additional assistance.

I got the dll files from this form. I downgraded the version of UniFlash to version 3.2.0. This version attempts to communicate with the device but also fails.

When requesting the version information I'm informed to reset the device. But this does nothing as I keep getting the same request over and over.

Hi Steven,

I think it is best if we can understand why it is happening on the latest Uniflash in your case (I don't recall seeing it on Windows7 before, maybe reported once on the E2E). It is possible to test by reverting to older versions but we would need to come back to the latest anyway.

Ricky is the expert in this area so I suggest wiating for his reply. He should be back tomorrow.

Sorry to hear about your experience with UniFlash so far. Please let me try to figure out what the cause of the problem is.

From the error message, it sounds like it is not able to load FlashAPI.dll, and since you have confirmed that the file is actually there, it might be missing one of its dependency.

The necessary dependencies should have been installed during the UniFlash installation, but maybe something went wrong.

Can you download Dependency Walker (www.dependencywalker.com), and then open the FlashAPI.dll using this tool? This should show any dependencies that are missing. You can also save the results (File -> Save As) and send me the dwi file so that I can have a look at it.

Hopefully, this will provide the necessary information on why you are seeing the Error loading DLL error.

Thanks for sending me the log.

The log is saying that your system is missing the FTD2XX.dll. This might be related to an UniFlash installer problem we are currently looking at, where the drivers we are including are expire. This will be fixed in the next UniFlash release.

In the mean time, can you try installing the CC3200 SDK (www.ti.com/.../CC3200SDK)? This should install the FTD2XX drivers as well.

Hi Ricky

I reinstalled the CC3100 SDK (I don't have a CC3200 board). This however did not solve the problem.

Any other suggestions?

Did you get the "Do you want to install FTDI driver on your system?" dialog during the CC3100 SDK install? I just tried to install it and I got this dialog. This should be the step that installs the necessary driver files.

Maybe this is a permission issue and you are not able to install the drivers.

Can you also look in your C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp\ for the most recent bitrock_installer_*.log file. This should be log for the CC3100 SDK install. Maybe there is information on if the driver install process was run and what errors it was getting.

Hi

Yes I did get the dialog asking if I want to install the drivers and replied Yes.

The latest log file contains no errors (Contain about 10 lines), the one before that contains information about CCS 6 but I could not find any issues in it with regard to a problem installing any drivers.

I will create a Windows VM tomorrow and do a fresh install on it and let you know what the results are.

Hi Steven,

Have you tried to make other example program work first like "getting_started_with_wlan_station", which can be found at "C:\ti\CC3100SDK_1.1.0\cc3100-sdk\platform\tiva-c-launchpad\example_project_ccs"?

Have you updated your CC3100 Service Pack using Advanced Emulator Booster Pack?

Sorry it has taken so long.

I created the VM and installed CCS and UniFlash. CCS is working correctly with the blinky example, but I still cannot communicate with the CC3100 device.

There are no other software (Eclipse, compilers etc.) installed on the VM.

So not sure how to proceed.

NOTES

As a long shot I copied the ftdi2xx.dll and ftd264.dll to the same directory as the flashapi.dll. dependency_walker detected the ftd2xx.dll

but then I got a bunch of error related to the ftd2xx.dll files.

Next I added the path of the ftd2xx.dll files to my path environment variable. But here I also just got a bunch of errors.

Sorry, Ricky not sure what else I can try to find the cause of the problem.

When I connect the TM4C123GLX board to UniFlash I have no problem communicating with the device. I did not try to program the device but I can query the device.

Not sure if that helps at all.

I don't know how correct this is because I don't use Linux on a regular basis so my knowledge of that OS is limited.

I installed the UniFlash version that you included on mint Linux (Linux 3.16.0-38-generic). Using KInfocenter -> Device Info ->Serial Device that the In-circuit debugger is connected to ttyACM0. Using that info in UniFlash also gives me errors about not being able to connect to the device.

If this is not correct maybe you can tell me how to find the correct "com port" under Linux to use, and I will try again.

Sorry, to hear you are still having trouble with this. I have successfully tried getting_started_with_wlan_station example program using Tiva Connected Launchpad + CC3100 Booster Pack. See my blog post below.

Testing WLAN Station with CC3100 Booster Pack and Tiva Connected Launchpad

Before I tried the getting_started_with_wlan_station example program I updated the Service Pack to latest using Uniflash for SimpleLink Devices. My setup was CC3100 Booster Pack + SimpleLink Advanced Emulation Booster Pack.

Then I was able to test getting_started_with_wlan_station example program using CCS and also by flashing the .bin file using LM Flash Programmer.

I thought you were using TIva Launchpad. But, you mentioned Tiva Development Board. I just remembered there is a Tiva Development Board. Is DK-TM4C123G the one you are using?

When you installed UniFlash 3.4 on your Windows machine, which components did you pick during the install? And can you send me the installer logs? It should be located in your <installDir>/install_logs/ uniflash_setup_3.4.0.00002_install.log

If the drivers are installed properly, I think it should get copied to the C:\Windows\System32\ folder, and there shouldn't be a need to copy the dll manually, or modify the path variable. So, something must not be installer properly on you machine for some reason.

Do you mean you connect TM4C123GLX board to be programmed by Uniflash? What Uniflash is that? Is that Uniflash for SimpleLink Devices?

Since you used the default installation options, can you include the ti_emupack_6.0.14.5_install.log file as well?

Can you let me know how you are connecting the CC3100 BoosterPack to your PC?

You might need the Advanced Emulation BoosterPack (www.ti.com/.../CC31XXEMUBOOST), as the CC3100 does not have an emulator built-in. If you already have one, please make sure it is connected to the PC as the drivers will only be installed when the associated hardware is detected on Windows. Once the necessary hardware is detected, the drivers should install and be copy to \Windows\System32\ folder.

Ricky let me ask you this, if I want to use the CC3100 with a TM4C123GLX development board what additional hardware do I need to develop for CC3100 base applications and/or change the configuration of the CC3100 device?

I will need to confirm this with the relevant people (since I'm not a hardware expert), but I think you will need a CC31XXEMUBOOST as well. Please read the Description field in the CC3100 BoosterPack product page for more information: www.ti.com/.../CC3100BOOST
