CC3100: CC3100 TCP Socket example - Can this interface with a REST API?

Hi everyone! I have a [very] amateurish question: Can the CC3100 TCP Socket example be used to interface with a REST API? In my case, I want to use the TCP Socket example and modify it to interface with Adafruit.io's REST API. 

I've also found Kas Lewis's blog online, located at the bottom of this post.

Could someone point me in the right direction to interface with  REST API using the TCP Socket, if this is possible? Thanks everyone!
