CC3200MOD: Antenna layout discrepancies between datasheet and LP reference design & performance issues

I perused the forums and followed up on a similar earlier post (https://e2e.ti.com/support/wireless_connectivity/simplelink_wifi_cc31xx_cc32xx/f/968/t/425298#pi239031350=2perhaps the thread is closed out, so I'm creating a new thread here.

antenna 50 ohm impedance requirement. We created our own board following the CC3200MOD LP reference design exactly, but the WiFi range is rather poor. (noticeable 50 foot range difference, our board only works about 20 feet under same output power specifications). Our fab house produced a board that was relatively thin to meet the 50 ohm impedance requirement. 

My questions:

- Is tuning the impedance matching network still required if we are following the reference design exactly?

- what is stackup used in the Launchpad? Previous stackup from Launchpad that was sent to us did not yield a 50 ohm impedance

- the datasheet contradict the LP reference design - E.g. spacing around antenna trace in Launchpad is 6 mils, but datasheet says to give 18 mils. Which should be used? Why the discrepancy between the design and datasheet? If we want to ensure FCC reuse we have to go against the datasheet?

Any clarity you can provide would be very helpful. Thank you.

    Yes you should tune your impedance matching network considering your design is not the same as a Launchpad, and you may have a case, etc.

    Only the recommendations on the datasheet are necessary to follow for certification compliance

    Sorry for the delayed reply and thank you for yours.

    So in the schematic below, would it be the DNP components or also some of the others that are adjusted for tuning? I'm curious because we will make a couple hundred boards and I'd like to plan if we should tune ahead or after assembly.

    Also, I looked up the FCC cert for the CC3200MOD and it shows the Launchpad being used in the emissions testing. So if the Launchpad was designed one way and earned the cert, but the datasheet specs a different approach, I want to ensure following the datasheet wouldn't put us out of compliance. Can you elaborate and confirm?
