CC3100MOD: antenna trace impedance

Part Number: CC3100MOD

I'm trying to design antenna wire and calculate trace width. On Fr4 2-sided PCB 1,5mm thick and 35um copper i get more than 100 mils trace width in microstrip PCB stack and 50 mils in stripline stack.

To check my calculation I made calculation for TI Eval board. TI board has 35um copper, core 0,92mm, FR4 2-sided PCB, antenna track width (measured) 20 mils. Based on this data I get 92.5 ohm in microstrip mode and 61 ohm in striplaine mode, but on EVB PCB antenna trace is routed on Top layer, it means mocrostrip mode.

Am I wrong ?

  • Hi Michal,

You must include the GND around the RF trace for a proper calculation. You want to consider it a coplanar wave guide and not simply a micro-strip even though it is on the top layer. This is how the reference boards were designed.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks,
    Riz
