I can see that there is basic module CC3120R (64 pin QFN package) available.

And CC3120MOD is developed using CC3120R + Clock oscillators + Serial Flash.

Could you please elaborate what difference this will make on Serial flash interface?

I mean, CC3120R datasheet says that CC3120R device will act as a master and serial flash as slave.
Whereas, CC3120MOD datasheet mentions that serial flash can be programmed directly via the external flash interface.How is this possible?

What exactly is the purpose of using this serial flash with CC3120R?

Hi Shalaka,

The CC3120MOD includes a direct interface to the serial flash to enable gang programming via SPI. You have the ability to program the serial flash via SPI prior to assembling when using the CC3120 chip as well, so there isn't really a difference. Diagram of how the interface is broken out on module -

The CC3120 has no on-chip non-volatile memory, so the external flash is necessary for storing system/configuration files and the servicepack which provides updates to the firmware. Though these are the primary functions, this storage space can be useful for things like storing files that will be served locally via the internal web server or for buffering a downloaded application image when performing an over-the-air update (OTA).
