CC3220S-LAUNCHXL: RF layout

Part Number: CC3220S-LAUNCHXL

Hi,

It seems like the RF portion in the "Hardware Design Files" (http://www.ti.com/lit/zip/SPRCAG0) is laid out differently than on the Launchpad.

Launchpad:

Gerbers from design files:

Could you explain why there is a mismatch and which style is better?

Thanks,

David

  • David -
are you wanting to use the module (based on the QFN of the device) or the QFN in your design? Looks like you have images of both above in your post.

  • Hi Josh,

Thanks for reply. I was looking at wireless routing/antenna portion. In my case I use QFN-only, but I assumed that the recommended layout for antenna routing is the same between the two. Could you describe the pros/cons of the 2 layouts and recommend which one should be used? I am not very familiar with RF layout and need guidance. Both pictures seem to comply with antenna spec (inside the 5mm x 6mm box) so I was wondering if there are any guidelines for routing the lines outside the 5mm x 6mm box? Thanks again for your reply during the weekend.

    Thanks,
    David
  • Hi David,

There are no particular pros/cons to the different layout, both layout are design for optimal RF performance considering the stackup, substrates etc. If you are using the module and want to reuse certification it is best to follow the Module layout. If you are using the QFN the layout design guidelines contains recommendations for the RF layout.

What is the 5x6 mm box you are referring to?

    Regards,

    Charles O

  • Hi Charles,

Thanks for reply. If I follow the antenna layout style of the launchpad with QFN, will I be able to reuse the certification?

Is there a requirement on how exactly the design should be copied in order to be able to reuse the certification?

5mm x 6mm box is the area on the PCB edge that includes the antenna and is free of any copper fills inside and underneath the box.

    Thanks,

    David

  • Hi David,

The certification reuse only applies to the modules i.e. CC32xxMod or CC31xxMod.

The major points of the requirements for reuse are listed below, However you still need to consult your TCB for confirmation
    1. Have antenna of similar type and same or less gain
    2. Similar layout
    3. similar out-of-band characteristics.
