cc3220: CC3220 1.85V Pre-Regulated Mode Requirements

I would like to run the CC3220 in 1.85 V pre-regulated mode. The CC3220 data specifies the following as one of the requirements.

My concern is with the last requirement of the settling time under 4 us. My understanding is that that once the regulated load gets a step function from 0-500 mA, that transient recovery time to 1.85V should be less than 4 us. However, based on this I am having difficultly finding a regulator that meets this requirement from the TI's portfolio. A regulator such as TLV62568, which shows very fast transient and meets all the other reqirements,still seems insufficient. My question is then will this regulator work and is the interpretation of that requirement correct? Are there any recommendations from TI regarding the regulator for running 1.85V pre-regulated on the CC3220.

Hi,

The TLV62568 seems sufficient. However i will check with the DCDC converter group for any other recommendations and get back to you

Thank you, I will wait for the response from the DCDC converter team. Are there any recommended TI parts for this 1.85V pre-regulated mode that you are aware of?

in our experience - while this mode will work for you - the drawbacks outweigh the benefits - is there a real reason you need to use 1.89VDC pre-regulated?

Hi Josh

If we meet those listed criteria from the regulator as you say the TLV62568 does, what are the drawbacks? We are attempting to make the PCB board small as possible, hence we are using the 1.85V to reduce the BOM for the CC3220.

Hi,

The drawback are

1 . Lower TX output power compared to the wide voltage mode
2. Lower sensitivity compared to the wide voltage mode

Hi.

At what Tx level does the different modes matter. If I do not plan to go below power level 4, does the lower tx output power play a role or is it lower output power at every power setting. What is the sensitivity change compared to wide voltage mode? If both these drawbacks are acceptable to our desgn, how do we overcome the transient criteria of < 4us as per the original question.
