WL1837MOD: Dual Role support for BT Smart

Part Number: WL1837MOD
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: WL1837, CC2564C, , CC2640R2F

Hi champs,

Customer want to build up a connection to a smartphone (WL1837 -> peripheral, GAP profile) and simultaneous scan for advertisement (WL1873 - > central).

Is this possible, do we support dual role support in WL8 ?

  • Hi DJ,

If I understand the question right, you are asking if the BLE peripheral and BLE central roles are possible in WL1837MOD simultaneously. If yes, this feature is known as the LE Link layer topology or LE dual role topology and the WL183x devices do not support this feature. We have a standalone dual-mode Bluetooth part CC2564C that supports this feature.

If I misunderstood the question and if you are asking about having BLE central role in addition to BT classic connection, WL183x can support that use-case.

    Best regards,
    Vihang
  • Vihang,

Indeed, I am asking for LE dual role topology.

Does CC2640R2F support dual role too (I think so)?

So when expecting this feature in combination with WL8 WiFi, a WL8 Module without BT in a combo with a CC2564C-/CC2640R2F module would fulfill their requirements ?

    Can you confirm ?

To best of my knowledge yes, the CC2640R2F supports this feature. But as you know, this product family is owned by a different group. So please confirm on the BLE forums.

Using a two chip solution will help realize this product requirement. But please note that this kind of solution may have coexistence issues. The WL183x devices have built in coexistence algorithms to handle WLAN+BT+BLE connections simultaneously. If using a two chip solution, there might not be an equivalent coexistence. If your application requirements allow, you can only use the WLAN in 5GHz mode and avoid most of the coexistence issues since the BLE will be in the 2.4GHz band.

    Hope this helps.
