WL1835MOD: Can I reuse the Beaglebone Black wireless FCC Certification?

Part Number: WL1835MOD

If I were to copy the TI reference design I would be able to leverage the modular FCC certification and not have to retest for my design. Does this same concept apply if I copy the Beaglebone Black Wireless design? As far as I can tell the design is very similar, but the RF traces are shorter. I imagine these shorter traces might mean the transmitted power would be increased and so I would be limited to the same antenna that they use?

  • Hi,
Please refer to wiki : processors.wiki.ti.com/.../WL18xxMOD_Regulatory_Product_Certification

    From wiki:
Q: Can the customer change the layout or use a different type of Antenna?
A: Customers that modify the antenna or layout in a way that changes the power (higher gain, shorter traces) are not able to leverage TI FCC ID through a Permissive Class 1 change. Such changes generally require additional testing and certification approval through a regulatory lab.

    Thanks

  • Thanks for the quick reply, Saurabh!

I am aware of that wiki and have read the FAQ, but I don't think the Q&A you have referenced answers my question. I was wondering if the Beaglebone Black Wireless FCC certification is modular? In other words, if I copy the Beaglebone Black Wireless layout verbatim, will I have to retest?
  • Hi Kyle,
That would fall under C1PC (class 1 permissive change).  To elaborate - if you use one of TI  WL8 reference designs such as  you can reuse the WL8 module FCC cert by filing C1PC. TI does not manufacture beaglebone wireless board - in case you intend to copy that design you will need to get in touch with the board manufacturer and check if they got the board FCC certified and same rule will apply to it.

    Thanks
