Regarding TRF24XX frequency range

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TRF370417, CC2500

Hi Community,

I am recently working on a project in which I require to do wireless communication at 5.9 GHz. I have been searching through different wireless chips which TI can provide in this frequency range.

While searching this I have found that TRF24XX can be used in my in my project. But there is one small doubt which I couldn't able to resolve through the online documentation is that is TRF can work at 5.9 GHz as well?

Also, is there any other option which is available to do wireless communication at 5.9 GHz in TI product portfolio (whether from BLE , WIFI or any other) ?

As always thanks very much for the help. I am waiting for your response.

Regards

  • Hi,

Can anyone help me in this regard.

    Thanks for your time.

  • Mohit,

The TRF2343 is an intergrated IF based receiver. The VCO has to be divided down so the LO can only work optimally in the hundreds of MHz range as listed in the datasheet.

Our group does not have integrated transceiver chips that may be available to you at 5.9GHz, unfortunately. You can look at some of the discrete solutions like the TRF370417 for the TX modulator and TRF371115 for the RX demodulator. You can pick and choose the ADC/DAC that go with these two RF solutions.

  • Hi Kang,

Thanks very much for your answer.

What is the range of communication in terms of distance that we can expect from the discrete solutions which are mentioned above ?

Is the the above solution has range comparable to BLE solution provided in CC2500 ?

Also, how these chips can be interfaced with TI MCU ?

I didn't found any clear information on the above aspects from online documents.

    Thanks again for your time.

  • Mohit:

I think you may have originally been asking about the TRF2436 which is a 2.4GHz / 5.9 GHz up/down converter. This is an old device and its low IF conversion chip is NRND. I would not recommend a new design with that part. I am going to transfer this post over to the LPRF team. I think that their integrated transceivers will be more suitable.

  • Hi RJ Hooper,

Thanks for the reply. Yes sure I am waiting for the reply from LPRF team as well as from Mr kang based on previous discussion.

Thanks for all the help and time.

  • Hi Mohit,

I don't believe any of our parts reach 5.9 Ghz. The closest you'd get is with a WiLink device that supports 5 GHz, but 802.11a still only reaches 5.825 GHz.

    Best regards,
