CC3120: 1.85V mode, IRQ keep low after Flash programming

Part Number: CC3120
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UNIFLASH, CC31XXEMUBOOST,

Hello Wi-Fi champions,

My customer is using CC3120R with 1.85V pre-regulated mode. We did some experiment on CC3120 boosterpack first. Here's the steps:

  1. We reworked the bootsterpack board to support 1.85V, completely followed the cc3120 datasheet, chapter 6.1.2.
  2. Launched radio tool and performed RX, TX testing, RX worked normally; however failed to start TX test, the GUI frozen and not responding. the SP is 3.8.0.3_2.0.0.0_2.2.0.6. The interface is SPI.
  3. We tried to reprogram the SP with 3.9.0.3_2.0.0.0_2.2.0.6 through Uniflash v4.5.0.2056, under 1.85V condition. the Uniflash showed programming successfully.
  4. We then tried to connect to the chip via SPI, just like step2, but failed to see EMUBOOST generate SPI clock.
  5. We found that the INTR pin kept low at all times.

We suspect that the service pack programming did not success, or there's something stuck during the power cycling after the programming. Please help!

Many thanks!

Jo

  • This is follow up test result.
We programmed a boosterpack with sp_3.9.0.6_2.0.0.0_2.2.0.6, and reworked it to 1.85V power rail.
Unfortunately the radio tool TX testing failed as well, the GUI frozen and not responding. Please advice, thanks.

  • Jo -

did you rework the EMU BoosterPack for 1.85V operation, too? See  the EMU board has level shifters on it, net name is VCC_BP - make sure you see that U10 is the 3.3V LDO on there, so in this case, you would want to remove jumper on j4 and provide 1.89VDC to pin 1  - this should get SPI back to correct voltages

  • Dear  Josh

    CC31XXEMUBOOST modify to 1.85V

    remove J4 & supply 1.89V to J4 pin 1

    measure CC3120BOOST Header P1.1 has 1.89V voltage

    CC3120BOOST bias 3.3V modify to 1.85 V
    schematic modify as below
    remove L2 (VDD_ANA) , L3 (VDD_PA) ,  (Red X mark)
cuf off  the power trace between C19 & C20  (VDD_PA) (Red slash)
    connect pin 33 (VDD_PA) & C16(VDD_ANA) to VBAT_CC  (Blue wire)

    PCB modify as below
    remove L2 (VDD_ANA) , L3 (VDD_PA) (yellow rectangle)
cuf off  the power trace between C19 & C20  (VDD_PA) (green slash)

    connect pin 33 (VDD_PA) & C16(VDD_ANA) to VBAT_CC  (gray rectangle & black wire)

The Radio tool TX start and stop will crash,

And the spectrum analzyer didn't get any WiFi signal at pressing TX start

but RX can recive packet and stop successfully

, so we don't think it is SPI connection issue or CC31XXEMUBOOST bias issue

WE also try other modify as below

    1.Remove C20, L2,L3 (green rectangle)  and  C7 change to 22uF (yellow rectangle)

    2.Remove C20 ,C19, L2, L3 (green rectangle) and add  22uF nearby Pin 33 (yellow rectangle)

The result is the same, Radio tool TX will crash

    Many thanks

    BR.

    Youwin

  • Hi Youwin,

I am sorry to here that the problem is not resolved. We will perform a rework on our side and see if we can get it working. Please allow a few days and we will get back to you.

    Thanks,
    Riz
  • Jo,

What Power supply are you using for the 1.85 Power Supply? Can you measure the voltage using an oscilloscope when you turn TX on? I would like to see if voltage dips when you try to Transmit.

    Regards,
    VR
  • Dear VR

The model of power supply we used are GW GPC-3030D and we measure voltage at supply is 1.893V as below.

We measure voltage at CC3120BOOST header P1.1 is 1.890V as below

When Radio tool connect to CC3120BOOST, we measure voltage by oscilloscope show as below

When Radio tool press TX start, we measure voltage by oscilloscope show as below

The voltage drop only 0.02V at minimun & 0.004V at RMS. The voltage at Max & High are the same.

When press TX stop, the tool will crash.

The voltage is only drop  0.02V at minimun & 0.003V at RMS. The voltage at Max & High are the same.

We thnik the trancesciver doesn't tramsmit any signal because the power supply show current only around 20mA.

  • Hi Youwin,

To be on the safe side, I recommend starting with a new board and making the following modifications:

    On the CC3120BOOST:

    1. remove L2 and L3

    2. cut the trace going to C19

    3. Solder a wire from VDD_ANA net (I chose the top side of L2) to P1.1

Solder a wire from the VDD_PA net (I chose the bottom side of C6) to P1.1

    On the CC31xxEMUBOOST:

    1. Remove the jumper on J4 and provide 1.89VDC to pin 1(VCC_BP) and a common ground

I was able to successfully flash the servicepack and transmit using Radio Tool with these modifications.

    Thanks,

    Alexis

  • Dear Alexis

    We rework CC3120BOOST as yours

and measure voltage of P1.1 as 1.898V

but Radio tool TX function still crash

  • Hi Youwin,

Form the image above it shows that you are connected? Can you help explain further what you mean by radio tool is crashing? Have you downloaded the latest from TI.com? What is the operating system you are using?

    Thanks,
    Riz
  • Hi Youwin,

Are you still having this issue? IF so we will send the board to Jo.

    Thanks,
    Riz
  • Dear Riz

    I reply as below

Form the image above it shows that you are connected?

Yes, We connected CC3120BOOST. We can see at picture of Radio tool.

Can you help explain further what you mean by radio tool is crashing?

We press TX stop and didn't get it stop and sometime will see it report stop operation

Have you downloaded the latest from TI.com?

We test the latest SP 3.9.3.6 below

We change to another CC3120BOOST board and use uniflash upgrade to FW 3.9.0.6

And rework to 1.89V circuit as below photo

And use Tx of Radio tool 1.0.2.0 (SPI interface) to control and it still hang (can't stop and no RF signal)

And use Tx of Radio tool 1.0.3.5 (UART interface) to control and it will report Radio tool Stop operation

What is the operating system you are using?

    Windows 7 enterprise 2009 SP1 64bit as below picture

  • Hi Youwin,

Closing out the issue here as we sent our board to Jo.

    Thanks,
