CC3220S: Opening Image Creator from Uniflash

Part Number: CC3220S
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UNIFLASH, ,

I've noticed now with Uniflash version 4.6.0.2176 that when CC3220S is selected, the Uniflash New Configuration flow only allows opening a connection based on JTAG (On-Chip).  There is no longer a "serial" option that will open Image Creator.  The only way I can find that gives me this option is to choose "CC3220SF-LAUNCHXL (Serial)" option.

I have been working with at least one customer who has found this quite confusing.  Is this change intentional or an oversight?

Thanks,

Stuart

  • Hi Stuart,

I've always used the "CC3220SF-LAUNCHXL' option so I didn't notice any change in the behavior of the CC3220S option. Looking back at version 4.5.0 it looks like the CC3220S already lost the option to directly launch Imagecreator. What version were you using before? I will ask our tools team about this and whether the intended behavior is for customers to always use the CC3220SF-LAUNCHXL GUI option.

    Regards,
    Michael
  • I was using Uniflash version 4.2.1.1541 before updating. That version still has the "serial" option for CC3220. I'm actually not sure what value the JTAG "on-chip" option has for this device. I've never found a situation where it was useful.

    Thanks,
    Stuart
  • Hi Stuart,

The JTAG option doesn't really do anything useful as you've mentioned, since code loaded through JTAG is not persistent on the CC3220 unlike most other TI MCUs. With other MCUs such as the MSP devices or the LPRF devices, using JTAG to load code will effectively flash the device. I imagine that since this JTAG-loading functionality was already developed for the CC3220 given its use in debugging with CCS it was also provided in Uniflash to provide feature parity with other TI MCUs even though it is not the most useful tool for the CC3220 specifically.

As for the serial option not showing up when you select the CC3220S chips directly, this is a known issue that will be fixed in a future release of Uniflash.
