Hi All,

I know have the community is going to say this is simple, good help me become part of that 1/2.

I have a project that was developed using a CC3200 and I program it via uniflash and a USB/UART connection to the CC3200 (custom board using TX/RX lines.)

Now I have the same board with the only difference being it has a CC3220SF chip instead. I installed the newer uniflash tool and am trying to work through creating an image to download. Currently it would be nice if I could just connect to the device and read the current version (or anything.) I keep getting:

I think I have my setup correct, but I couldn't find where to set the COM port number. (The CC3200 Uniflash I had to specify it.)

The Device is powered, the jumper is connected for programming and I hit reset a few times. (The normal things I would do when programming the CC3200 version.)

Thanks much for any suggestions. Would there happen to be a video somewhere of this process?

Hi Bob,

It looks like you're on the right track. UniFlash ImageCreator is supposed to auto-detect the COM port, but sometimes it doesn't cooperate.

1. The SOP pins should be set to 100 or 010. (It sounds like you're already doing this, but there's a LaunchPad image here on SimpleLink Academy just in case.)

2. Try to remove all other USB connections from your laptop besides the LaunchPad. Occasionally we find USB hubs don't work very well.

3. Try a new USB cable.

4. If the auto detection continues to fail, you can set the COM port manually using the command line:

dslite.bat --mode cc32xx project program --name PROJECT_NAME --port COM_NUM

Hi Sarah,

I have this module replacing my CC3200 module: (CC3220MODSF12MOBR) I need a sanity check that this module isn't expecting some other flash chip on the board. Here is the DigiKey link:

Hi Bob,

I missed that you're using your custom board. I assumed it was a LaunchPad. We're the listed manufacturer of that module, so it should be fine.

Have you looked through the Design Checklist for CC3220MOD? There are some hardware updates required when moving from a CC3200MOD to CC3220MOD. You'll see a Migration-MOD tab in the Excel downloaded from the link below.

eeek. I thought it was a hardware drop in replacement. I'll check it out. Feel free to respond with things that would definitely cause a problem if I took a CC3220MOD and put it on the CC3200 Launchpad. (I did check my SOP lines last night and they are 100.)

Hi Bob,

I believe the only real change is pull up resistors on the SOP pins, at least concerning this flashing issue. There are also recommended extra caps on VBAT. Hopefully that would be a quick test on your existing board.

Hi Sarah,

I only use the serial communication via the RX/TX lines

So I have the following configuration for the SOP0, 1, and 2 lines: (Basically they are all pulled low unless programming in that case I pull SOP2 high)

I'm not using JTAG programmers.

Hi Bob,

The CC3220 module requires that you have a 270 Ohm resistor between your SOP lines and VCC. In your case, could you test this on your SOP2?

The CC3220MOD has internal pulldowns on the SOP lines, which differs from CC3200MOD.

At the moment when I place a jumper in for SOP2 it connects directly to VCC (3.3 volts in my case.) I'll replace the jumper with a 270 resistor if you think it needs that. (SOP1 and SOP0 don't need to be pulled up since the value I want is 100.)

ok, have a 270 resistor in there as pullup. no noticeable difference yet but I'll keep walking through the process.

BTW where can I find the service pack for CC3220? (UNIFLASH is asking for it.)

Hi Bob,

The servicepack is packaged in the SDK for Gen 2 and 3. It'll be tools/cc32xx_tools/servicepack-cc3x20/sp_xxxx_xxxx_xxxx.bin
SDK available here: www.ti.com/.../simplelink-cc32xx-sdk

I also suggest removing that external pulldown for SOP2.

ok, last question for the night. I'm looking at the dslite.bat commands. Is there a simple command like "read firmware version or chip info"? Anything just to get a response.

Not sure if this means anything but when I remove the pull down resistor at SOP2 (pin 23) Pin23 stays high at VCC now. It does drop to 0V when I hit the reset button, but back to VCC when I let go of the Reset button. (same with the 270ohm resistor on there.

Is this the same behavior you see on the CC3220 launchpad.

Bob,
Do you have another board you can test with the 270 ohm resistor? If pull the SOP pins high with no current limiting resistor, it's possible you damaged the part.

Also, What are you using for the emulator? (Whats converting CC3220 UART to USB COM port on your PC).

I have 5 prototypes. 4 with the CC3220 on them, one with a CC3200 on it. The CC3200 works perfect. I use the following to program:

I only connect RX, TX and GND. (TTL-232R-3V3-2MM from digikey)

I'm going to can the CC3220 idea for now and swap them back to the CC3200. (I had thought they were a drop in upgrade. : ( )

(I've tried all 4 CC3220 without the pullup so they are probably fried.)

The answer is NO unless someone can swap out a CC3200 with a CC3220 on a CC3200Launch pad and test.

Hi Bob,

The modules have the same pad footprint as we stated, but some pins have different requirements than Gen 1. Jan provided the link to the hardware design checklist (SWRU462) with the migration information in the first response on that thread. We can clarify this message on the forums in the future, but I don't think we implied the module was a drop-in swap.

If you decide to resume your CC3220 project, you can open a new thread and post your schematic on the forums for us to review.

Thanks for the information. Sad part is the thread name was is it a drop in replacement.

I'll be fine, we are swapping out the units this week, eventually I'll respin the board for a CC3220.
