WL1831MOD: more detail on power supply consumption

Part Number: WL1831MOD

We are concerned about current consumption and temperature rise on this part and require some additional information about this:

1)      Is it possible to get realistic current consumption data for 3V1 VBAT voltage? At this moment I am using the idea that current consumption is flat figure power wise and just recalculate current for 3V1 rail, knowing power for 3V7 VBAT.

2)      Do you have a typical current consumption graph for the WiFi calibration routine? Is it possible to change time between calibrations or just disable it?

3)      Do you have current on 1V8 rail consumption figures for WL1831MOD which you can share with us please?

  • ajayt,

    1) You can definitely estimate this using the power formula, but I would recommend that you or the customer actually measure this. You said that the current consumption is a flat figure. Is this because the device is currently doing nothing? Do you mean that over 30 seconds, for example, the current consumption will stay the same? Has this been verified using a dc power analyzer or an oscilloscope w/ current probe? Current should be measured across time to properly calculate average current consumption. If the current fluctuates, a basic multimeter is not sufficient.

    2) I do not have a graph like this. The datasheet states that peak calibration can reach 850mA when VBAT is 3.7V, but this is for a short duration. This can be verified with an oscilloscope. I will check to see if you can disable calibration or change the period.

    3) I do not have data like this.

You asked for current consumption data when voltage is 3.1V and on the 1.8V rail. It is hard to assist you because current consumption will differ by numerous variables, such as

    • Is the device using both WLAN and Bluetooth?
    • How often is it TX/RX?
    • What is the device doing in between transmissions?

  • ajayt,

Regarding the calibration, we cannot disable or change it. Calibration is done every 5 minutes on serving channels and every 20 minutes on non-serving sub bands.
