CC3200: mDNS functionality

Part Number: CC3200

I am contacting you because we have some problems with cc3200 and mDNS functionality. When we search registered services we usually find the cc3200, but also from time to time we won’t. By using wireshark we can see that from time to time cc3200 won’t give a response to the query sent by the device searching for it. We are aware of possibility to change advertise setting via API but to this day, changing the advertise settings has not given us a solution. Do you happen to know why cc3200 won’t respond to the query from time to time? what can we do to fix this kind of behavior?

  • Hi Anders,

When the CC3200 is not responding to the mDNS query, is it still connected to the same network, as in there are no disconnect events?

Are you using the latest CC3200 servicepack?

How are you observing the packets with wireshark? Is this sniffing the local interface of a PC, or are you using monitor mode to observe all wireless traffic on the channel that the CC3200 is using?

    Regards,

    Michael

  • When the CC3200 is not responding to the mDNS query, is it still connected to the same network, as in there are no disconnect events?
Each device (CC3200, device D and PC P) are connected to the network. No disconnection events have happened

Are you using the latest CC3200 servicepack?
We are using 1.0.1.11-2.9.0.0 are servicepack which is the newest servicepack according to http://processors.wiki.ti.com

How are you observing the packets with wireshark? Is this sniffing the local interface of a PC, or are you using monitor mode to observe all wireless traffic on the channel that the CC3200 is using?

Our setup is following: CC3200 is connected to a router A, Device D is connected to router A, PC P is connected to routert A. Device D communicates with CC3200 via router A. PC P sniffs networks data continuously by using wireshark. We can see Device D’s query messages and CC3200 responses plus any other messages sent in the network. So we are using local interface of PC. It could be possible that the PC is just missing query answer for time to time, but each time it does device D has also not received an answer. This leads us to think that there is something in CC3200, since each device is connected to same router, no disconnection events.

Couple of findings: The weaker the signal between CC3200-Router-Device the more frequent is non answered query. Also from time to time, CC3200 stops to answer these queries for some time (around minute or two) and then continues as nothing happens.

Do you happen to have anyidea what might have caused this?
  • Hi Anders,

There is actually a newer CC3200 servicepack available, version 1.0.1.13-2.11.0.1. This servicepack is designed to be used with the new host driver version 1.0.1.13 that can be found within the new CC3200 SDK v.1.4.0. You may want to update to that latest version.

About your current network topology, it is not clear to me whether the PC monitors network traffic in promiscuous mode. That is to say, are you able to see all of the packets that are actually in the air? Maybe the AP is not sending out the packet over the air for some reason.

Also, are you using a specific example from the SDK, or are you testing with your own custom/heavily modified application?

    Regards,

    Michael

  • Hi Micheal and Andreas,

I'm using MDNS for discovering the devices. I'm using Continuous mDNS query for finding the list of the devices but I'm getting only one device but some time sl_NetAppGetServiceList() is giving two or three devices. But I want to track whether any user is within the network or outside the network.

    Thanks & Regards

  • Hi Manish,

I think that your issue here is a bit different from the main issue in this post, as you are seeing too many mDNS responses rather than the 0 responses that Anders is getting. I advise you create a separate thread to explain your issue in detail so that we can better focus on the specifics of your issue.

    Anders,

Did updating the servicepack resolve your issues?

    Regards,
    Michael

  • Hi Anders,

I assume that you have resolved your issue since I have not heard back from you. If not, feel free to post a response to this thread, or open a new thread regarding this issue.

    Regards,
    Michael
