BOOSTXL-CC3135: BOOSTXL-CC3135

Part Number: BOOSTXL-CC3135
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC31XXEMUBOOST, , MSP432E401Y, UNIFLASH, CC3135

What is CC31XXEMUBOOST ?

Can I develop a project only with BOOSTXL-CC3135 and  SimpleLink™ Ethernet MSP432E401Y MCU LaunchPad without CC31XXEMUBOOST?

Or is it compulsory to have CC31XXEMUBOOST also to develop a project?

  • Hi,

It is not mandatory to buy CC31XXEMUBOOST but is some cases it may to be useful. This hardware allows to connect BOOSTXL-CC3135 directly to your computer (via USB) and allows this things:

    • connect Uniflash software which allows to upload content into serial flash (your user files, files for webserver, ServicePack, etc.)
    • control to CC3135 from computer and create code for them
    • control CC3135 via radio tool for RF and certification testing

For connection to MSP432E401Y is not CC31XXEMUBOOST mandatory. If you have budget to buy CC31XXEMUBOOST my recommendation is to buy one, but if you don't buy them, you will be probably able deal with that.

  • Hi,

As Jan pointed out, the CC31XXEMUBOOST is a development tool that complements the CC3135. It is not strictly required for development or production, but it can make it more convenient. The main feature of the CC31XXEMUBOOST is that it has two on-board FTDI USB to UART chips. The CC31XXEMUBOOST has those chips routed to the launchpad leaders so that you can easily program the CC3135 and collect debug data.

As the CC3135 boosterpack doesn't have an on-board chip that provides USB to UART capabilities, you would normally want to get the CC31XXEMUBOOST as that will allow you to connect the CC3135 to your PC and perform the functionality that Jan mentioned. However, if you already have an MSP432E401Y launchpad, then you can use the XDS110 USB debugger to perform much of the same functionality.

In my linked post above, I explain how you can interface the CC3135 through the XDS110. The only bit of functionality that is missing if you were to use the XDS110 instead of the CC31XXEMUBOOST is radiotool connectivity. That is because for radiotool the RTS and CTS signals are required and those are not exposed by the XDS110.

Let me know if you need more clarification or have further questions on this topic.
