CC3120MOD: Host UART/SPI baud rate?

Hello Team,

I need some help understanding the speed's at which an MCU can write to the CC3120mod over UART or SPI to speed out in WIFI ? I see the UART can support up to 3MBps baud rate and SPI is a 20MHz clock so does that mean is 20Mbps? Im unsure on how to evaluate if i can use this module for providing it data at 600kbps over SPI. It looks like UART is an option but the SPI interface is not very clear to me.

Hi Julio,

The 20MHz SPI enables up to 13Mbps of TCP traffic or up to 16Mbps of UDP.

Hi Kobi,

I appreciate the response and the datasheet was clear about that capability. My question is on the input of the device, SPI ro UART interface. What are the speeds and can it support 600kbps? I see UART is adjustable to around 900 kbps from what i saw in the programmers guide. Is this correct? And if they wanted to use SPI instead it would not be doable? Can you advice.

Hi,

SPI is a serial (1 data line) interface so the clock speed basically translates to bit rate.

20MHz => 20 Mbps

The clock is provided by the host (the SPI master) which controls the speed.

There are overheads of using commands and of flow control mechanisms, so the actual application throughput will be a little bit less, but 600kbps should be easily supported over the SPI.
